Dancehall & Afrobeat

For the third year in a row IMA READ hosted a e series of events in connection with International Women’s Day. For 2017 we arranged a Dancehall and Afrobeat weekend with dance workshops, talks on gender and dance, over Skype with professional dancer Kirk Patterson, a lm screening and a night club at the local bar Circa.

Due to the success of our last DANCEHALL nightclub, for the Tromsø Arctic Pride Kick-off party, we decided to continue with this topic and, to take the conversation on queer afro-caribbean dance and music practices, further. Through these events, we want to reflect the deep political significance of the practices of dancehall and afrobeat to the communities and contexts it originated within and, to the queer, diasporic communities it continues to grow and develop from.
